2-Methyl-1,3-Propanediol, clear liquid, is a non-symmetric aliphatic diol (two primary hydroxyl groups) with a methyl branch. It is an isomer of 1,3 Butylene Glycol. It has low viscosity and is miscible in water and alcohols. It remains in liquid even in cold temperatures due to its non-symmetrical molecular structure. It is used in the production of polyesters, polyurethane coatings, adhesives, sealants or elastomers required to keep transparency, weatherability and long stability. Application:


There are a wide variety of applications for TMP like:

  • Alkyds for air-drying, acid-curing (urea or melamine resin), baking (urea or melamine resin) and isocyanate curing.
  • Saturated polyesters for liquid coatings, powder coatings and polyurethane systems (various).
  • Isocyanate crosslinkers
  • Pigment coating
  • Esters with acrylic acid for UV-curing, methacrylic acid as crosslinker in rubber and fatty acids as lubricants (various).


Production:


  • TMP is produced via a two step process, starting with the condensation of butanal with formaldehyde:
  • CH3CH2CH2CHO + 2 CH2O → CH3CH2C(CH2OH)2CHO
  • The second step entails a Cannizaro reaction:
  • CH3CH2C (CH2OH) 2CHO + CH2O + NaOH → CH3CH2C (CH2OH) 3 + NaO2CH
  • Approximately 200,000,000 kg is produced annually in this way.


Attention:


  • Do not breathe vapor. Avoid ignition sources. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
  • Wipe up with absorbent, inert material and place in suitable and closable container for disposal.
  • Handle and open container with care. Avoid vapor formation and ignition sources. Ensure good ventilation and local exhaust. Keep away from food and drink. Store in the original container securely closed and at room temperature.
