ApplicationIndustrial
N -Butyric acid (from Ancient Greek: βούτῡρον, meaning "butter"), also known under the systematic name butanoic acid, abbreviated BTA,[6] is a carboxylic acid with the structural formula CH3CH2CH2-COOH. Salts and esters of butyric acid are known as butyrates or butanoates. Butyric acid is found in milk, especially goat, sheep and buffalo milk, butter, parmesan cheese, and as a product of anaerobic fermentation (including in the colon and as body odor). Butyric acid is present in, and is the main distinctive smell of, human vomit.[9] It has an unpleasant smell and acrid taste, with a sweetish aftertaste similar to ether. Mammals with good scent detection abilities, such as dogs, can detect it at 10 parts per billion, whereas humans can only detect it in concentrations above 10 parts per million.

Applications:

  • The most important field of application is the Food Industry in which it is used as emulsifier for industrial baking, as natural acidifier and as preserver, as ingredient for baking powders, biscuits, candles, gelatines, jams and soft drinks.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry is the other strategical field for Natural L (+) TARTARIC Acid, which is used in various formulations for antibiotics, effervescent powders and tablets, drugs for heart diseases and therapeutic compounds against AIDS..
  • Natural L (+) TARTARIC Acid is also used in several Cosmetic applications.

Productions:

  • One way of producing tartaric acid is to recover it from tartar, a substance which is produced during the production of wine. However, the crude tartar which results from the production of wine is as a rule contaminated by organic materials so that expensive preparation is necessary to obtain the tartaric acid from the tartar.
  • Tartaric acid is a white crystalline diprotic organic acid. It occurs naturally in many plants, particularly grapes, bananas, and tamarinds, and is one of the main acids found in wine. It is added to other foods to give a sour taste, and is used as an antioxidant. Salts of tartaric acid are known as tartrates. It is a dihydroxy derivative of succinic acid.
  • Tartaric acid was first isolated from potassium tartrate, known to the ancients as tartar, c. 800 by the Islamic Alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan.

Attention:

  • Harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation. Avoid breathing vapors, or dusts. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothes.
  • Wash thoroughly after handling. Keep container closed.Wash exposed area with soap and water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
  • Wash eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lids occasionally. Seek Medical Aid. INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
  • If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately after giving two glasses of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
